David Drew MP for Stroud District visited the Berkeley Site today to meet the Site Director, Jim Crocker and undertake a familiarisation tour. David was given the chance to see decommissioning work taking place first hand and meet staff and contractors at the site. We thank David for his continued support for Berkeley Site.

Berkeley Site celebrates yet more success at the recent RoSPA Awards

This year RoSPA presented Berkeley Site with another prestigious Presidents Award. This is the site’s 14th consecutive award and was presented for an outstanding performance in health and safety at work. In deciding which award is appropriate, RoSPA looks at various site performance indicators. These include measures of occupational health, safety management systems and culture. RoSPA also look for consistent application of risk control measures, actions to reduce events and injuries and the number of days lost due to accident and ill health.

Energy Solutions Chief Operations Officer visits Berkeley Site

Alan Parker, Energy Solutions, Chief Operations Officer visited the Berkeley Site today to meet the Site Director, Jim Crocker and undertake a familiarisation tour. Energy Solutions is the current Parent Body Organisation (PBO) for Magnox Electric Ltd and Alan will be visiting other Magnox sites in both Magnox North and Magnox South. The comprehensive tour was given by Site Director,  Jim Crocker and Alan was shown just how much decommissioning work has already been safely undertaken at the Berkeley Site since the site stopped generating electricity in 1989.

As part of the future preparations for the construction of an ILW store at Berkeley Site work has been in progress to lay a piling platform. The work follows on from the landscaping of the proposed ILW store area with some 4600 new trees which will act as screening for the store when it is eventually built.

Berkeley Site supports Stroud High School achieve BA Silver Crest Award

Year 10 pupils from Stroud High School are celebrating this week after receiving the prestigious BA Silver Crest Award, which is given for outstanding achievements in Science, Engineering and Maths.  The pupils were set a real life engineering project by Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site, who have been working with the students for the past 8 months.  Berkeley Site Engineer, Ruth March and Physics Teacher, Iain Green led the project and provided the students with expert advice as well as arranging for a group of the students to visit the Berkeley Site.

Cleaning day success

With safety and compliance top of the agenda at Berkeley Site, a third housekeeping day was held on site in July. Staff, agency and contractors were put into hard hitting taskforce teams and sent out with one mission to de-clutter, clean and raise the overall standard of housekeeping across of the site. The clean up mission continued well into the afternoon and again proved a real success in making a recognisable improvement in appearance of work areas across the whole site. Site Director, Jim Crocker said: “yet again this has proved a valuable task to undertake. Safety and compliance are our top priorities and good housekeeping is a key way to ensure both of these are met. Thank you again to all those who took part and helped make a real improvement on site.”

Vale Vision gets smart

Vale Vision Development Trust in Dursley have gone all SMART thanks to a donation from Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site.  As part of the Berkeley Site's socio-economic development activities it has donated a new £2500 SMART white board to the trust's shop in Dursley.   The new board is interactive and can therefore be used in conjunction with the trusts IT equipment.  This will allow the delivery of training and development packages to the local community and to those currently unemployed, seeking new skills to aid them with future employment.

Berkeley Supports Engineering Students again BA CREST Award

As part of Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site's on going work with local schools, the site has been supporting pupils from Marling School, Stroud with their participation in the BA CREST awards. BA CREST is a nationally recognised accreditation scheme for project work in the fields of science and technology.

Berkeley Security team gain professional qualifications

Members of the Security team at Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site have received congratulations for their achievement in gaining a professional qualification with the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The four security team members who have undertaken the SIA training and examination are proud to be the first security personnel within Magnox Electric Ltd to register with and obtain the SIA qualification.

Berkeley supports school biodiversity plan

Stone with Woodford Primary School are celebrating this week after receiving £2,500 donated from the Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site. The donation will be used to buy science equipment to allow pupils to study the natural environment around their school grounds, including the study of plants and insects. The Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site is working closley with the school to support them in their study of science and is partnering on bio-diversity based projects.

Berkeley land delicensing - A Major Industry Achievement

Eleven hectares of land at Magnox Electric (ME) Berkeley have been delicensed - the largest single area in the UK to be removed from nuclear regulation to date in one go. This follows closely on the heels of UKAEA Harwell Site, who successfully delicensed seven hectares earlier in 2006.

Highly active cells at Berkeley are successfully dismantled

Berkeley’s decommissioning team have successfully completed the Post Operational Clean Out and dismantling of high active cells suites 16 and 17, while successfully ensuring low dose uptakes to workers and zero accidents or injuries to personnel, as well as enabling over 190 tonnes of steel to be recycled for reuse.

Berkeley Centre’s Low Level Waste (LLW) processing facility at has been successfully relocated to Berkeley Power Station, allowing the demolition of building C34 in the LLW compound.

He replaces Mark Steele, who moves to the Hinkley Point A decommissioning site in Somerset. Jim has worked in the nuclear industry on construction, generating and decommissioning sites since 1978. He brings considerable experience of project management led operations and joins Magnox Electric Ltd from the NASA Plum Brook Reactor Facility, Sandusky, Ohio.

As part of an acceleration programme to Berkeley’s Near Term Work Plan, site manager Mark Steele set a challenging target of dismantling and removing a complete suite of six high-active cells from within the site’s shielded area.

A report detailing recommendations for future use of part of the Berkeley site has been presented to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII). Both parties expressed initial satisfaction with the progress that the Task Force has made.
